Shaping technology decisions

IT architecture and strategy professionals help shape the technology decisions that enable organisations to grow, innovate and compete. Across the Netherlands, businesses are investing in cloud transformation, AI adoption, data platforms and digital modernisation initiatives, creating strong demand for architects and strategists who can align technology with long-term business goals.

We connect experienced architects, strategists and technology leaders with organisations across fintech, insurtech, greentech and transport, helping them access opportunities where they can drive transformation, influence technology direction and deliver lasting business impact.

Starting out in IT Architecture & Strategy

Expert advice from Associate Director, Mark Priems

Starting out in IT Architecture & Strategy

Technical depth is the entry requirement, but it stops being the differentiator fairly quickly. These are the skills we see consistently across the roles we place:

 • Broad technical foundation: genuine depth across infrastructure, cloud, data and software engineering, rather than expertise in one narrow area.
 • Cloud platform expertise: hands-on knowledge of major cloud providers; near-universal at solution architect level and above.
 • Enterprise architecture frameworks: familiarity with TOGAF or similar frameworks; more common in enterprise architecture roles than solution architecture.
 • Governance and standards: the ability to define and defend technology standards that other teams are expected to follow.
 • Stakeholder communication: explaining complex technical trade-offs to senior business stakeholders who do not share your technical vocabulary.
 • Business acumen: understanding how a technology decision connects to commercial outcomes, cost and risk.
 • Data and security literacy: baseline understanding of data governance and security principles regardless of specialism.
 • Influence without authority: building genuine buy-in from engineering teams and business stakeholders who do not report to you.

The candidates who move into architecture successfully are rarely the most technically brilliant engineers in the room. They are the ones who can hold a genuinely difficult trade-off conversation with a senior stakeholder and come out the other side with agreement rather than just compliance. That skill is harder to develop than any single technical certification, and it is what separates a strong architect from a strong senior engineer with a new title.

The highest-paying roles in IT architecture are the ones with enterprise-wide scope. Enterprise architects sit above solution architects, and heads of architecture and IT directors sit above both, with bonuses typically adding to base pay at the senior end. Based on current market data:

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Solution Architect, early career €42,000 - €94,000
Solution Architect (all levels) €61,000 - €103,000

Enterprise Architect (all levels)

€70,000 - €113,000
Enterprise Architect, experienced €75,000 - €136,000
Enterprise Architect, late career €80,000 - €109,000+
Chief Architect / Head of Architecture €88,000 - €156,000+

Amsterdam is the largest hub for architecture and strategy work and carries the highest pay, but Utrecht, Rotterdam and Eindhoven each bring their own mix of energy, port and high-tech architecture, and The Hague anchors public sector strategy. With hybrid working standard, choose the sector and the scale of estate you want to work on first and the city second.

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Amsterdam €55,000 - €105,000
Utrecht region €47,000 - €96,000
Rotterdam €46,000 - €83,000
Eindhoven €36,000 - €72,000

Yes, though the role is changing. Enterprise architecture still matters in the Netherlands because regulated sectors such as fintech and insurtech run complex estates that need someone connecting technology decisions to risk, cost and strategy. What has shifted is the expectation: architects are now valued for commercial fluency, security awareness and cloud and data depth, not diagrams alone.

Title matters less than the ability to influence decisions and much of the work we place is contract, so adaptability counts. If you can link architecture to business outcomes, it remains a strong, well-paid long-term career.

Architecture and strategy roles cluster where technology estates are largest and most regulated: financial services, fintech and insurtech around Amsterdam, energy and transport across the Randstad, and the public sector in and around The Hague. Opportunities are spread across the country rather than confined to the capital, and much of the work is contract or interim. Senior roles are few, so many are filled through direct relationships and never reach a job board. A specialist recruiter gives you visibility beyond what is advertised and a clearer picture of which sectors fit your experience.

IT Architecture & Strategy Career Progression

IT Architecture & Strategy Career Progression

No. AI is changing parts of the architecture role, but the core judgement it requires is nowhere near being automated. AI tools can draft diagrams, suggest technology options and speed up documentation, and architects who use them well are working faster than those who don't.

What AI hasn't replaced is the harder part of the job: weighing competing priorities, understanding an organisation's history and politics well enough to know why the obvious solution won't work, and building consensus among stakeholders with different incentives. In the Netherlands, that increasingly includes the works council (ondernemingsraad), which has consent rights over systems that process employee data or can monitor how people work, so an architect proposing an AI system needs to understand that approval process as well as the design.

Where AI is creating new demand is within architecture itself. Organisations need architects who can design AI-enabled systems responsibly, covering the governance, data and risk questions that come with them under the AVG and EU rules. That's a growing specialism, not a threat to the existing one.

The most common route is demonstrating architectural thinking in your current engineering role before the title changes: owning technical design decisions on a project, presenting trade-offs to stakeholders, and building a track record of decisions that held up over time.

In the Netherlands, that first opportunity often comes inside a cloud migration or a regulatory programme such as DORA or NIS2 readiness, where owning a design or integration decision is exactly the evidence employers look for. Employers hiring for a first solution architect role usually want proof you've already been doing parts of the job, not just a strong engineering CV.

It depends on what you find genuinely engaging alongside the decisions around pay. Solution architecture offers faster entry from engineering and a wide range of roles. Enterprise architecture tends to pay more at senior level but usually needs broader experience across several domains first. Cloud and data architecture remain strong specialisms, with demand for cloud depth shaped by modernisation, security and resilience requirements and by digital sovereignty, as organisations plan for portability alongside the major hyperscalers. Azure features most often in the cloud roles we place.

Regulated, complex sectors stand out: Financial services, fintech and insurtech, where regulation keeps estates large and demanding; Energy and greentech, and transport and logistics, both now covered by the Dutch Cybersecurity Act. Public sector digital transformation is another source, shaped by legacy modernisation and the government's move towards a sovereign cloud. Technology consultancies, enterprise software vendors and hyperscale providers also hire architects to support client engagements and platform growth.
