Transform how businesses work

Power Platform has evolved far beyond its origins as a low-code productivity tool. Across the Netherlands, organisations are using Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI and Copilot Studio to streamline processes, automate workflows and build business-critical applications without the time and cost associated with traditional software development. As more organisations build on Microsoft's business technology ecosystem, they need professionals who can turn business challenges into scalable Power Platform solutions.

Establishing your Career in Power Platform

Expert advice from Associate Director, Mark Priems

Establishing your <b> Career in Power Platform</b>

There's no singular route into Power Platform. We regularly see people start as business analysts, project coordinators or functional application managers, or as the person in finance or operations who quietly automated a messy process themselves. Some come through university or HBO placements or a Microsoft partner's early-careers programme, and a growing number switch from software development.

If you're starting from scratch, learn Power Apps and Power Automate first by solving a real problem, add Power BI if reporting appeals, then Dataverse, where the platform starts to feel serious. Dynamics 365 can wait.
Employers want evidence you can finish something. A couple of genuine projects beat a certificate alone. PL-900 is a sensible, inexpensive way to prove the basics and can help a CV through early screening, but pair it with something you've built around a real business process.

Power Apps and Power Automate are the baseline, but what separates a strong Power Platform professional at mid-to-senior level is Dataverse specifically, the data platform Power Platform sits on, and the ability to connect solutions to the systems around them. The skills that show up most often on the briefs we work:.

  • Power Apps: canvas and model-driven app development, the core building block of most Power Platform work.
  • Power Automate: cloud flows for process automation, with desktop flows and RPA increasingly expected too.
  • Power BI: report and dashboard development, including DAX and data modelling for anything beyond the basics.,
  • Dataverse: the data platform and data processing layer underneath most of Power Platform; understanding its structure is close to essential at mid-to-senior level.
  • Dynamics 365 : consultant and technical roles that also touch a D365 module, commonly Sales or Customer Service, do command a premium, worth knowing about even where it isn't the core of your Power Platform skill set.
  • Copilot Studio and AI Builder: building custom copilots and AI-powered features on the platform, increasingly a differentiator rather than a nice-to-have.
  • Azure and Azure DevOps Server: Logic Apps and Azure Functions on Microsoft Azure for extending the platform, plus general cloud computing fundamentals for anything touching infrastructure.
  • SharePoint and Microsoft 365: document management, intranet integration and the wider Microsoft 365 ecosystem most Power Platform solutions sit alongside.
  • SQL and Microsoft SQL Server: for anything involving data integration beyond what native connectors handle.
  • API and custom connector development: integrating Power Platform with systems Microsoft doesn't support out of the box.
  • Data governance and compliance: the AVG, including Power Platform's data loss prevention policies and data residency settings, since Dataverse environments sit squarely inside what those rules cover, with DORA adding operational resilience expectations for financial entities.
  • Business process mapping: genuinely understanding how a business operates before building anything, which separates a good consultant from someone who just knows the tool.

Python is showing up more often than it used to, mostly around AI Builder extensions and custom Copilot logic, though it's still a differentiator rather than a baseline requirement. A recognised Microsoft certification can carry real weight at the CV-screening stage, and candidates who can move comfortably between low-code platform work and proper software development are unusually well placed right now.

Start with PL-900 (Power Platform Fundamentals), then choose a direction: PL-400 (Power Platform Developer) if you lean technical, or PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) if reporting is your focus.

The consultant and architect paths have shifted towards AI. PL-200 (Power Platform Functional Consultant) retired on 31 August 2026 in favour of AB-410 (Intelligent Applications Builder Associate). PL-600 (Power Platform Solution Architect) and PL-500 (Power Automate RPA Developer) retired on 30 June, and Microsoft now points architects to AB-100 (Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect). Check Microsoft Learn before booking anything.

Whichever you choose, treat certification as the door and delivery as the offer. A project you can talk through in detail will carry more weight than the exam alone.

Power Platform pay in the Netherlands builds with the scope of what you own: from the high €30,000s for a junior developer, through the €50,000s and €60,000s for an established developer or consultant, to six figures for solution architects and practice leads. Dynamics 365 and Azure depth lifts pay further, and freelancers typically quote hourly rates in line with Dutch software development and IT consultancy.

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Junior Power Platform Developer (0-2 years) €36,000 - €46,000
Power Platform Developer / Mid-level (2-5 years) €46,000 - €62,000

Senior Developer / Dynamics 365 Consultant

€60,000 - €80,000
Lead Consultant / Solution Architect €75,000 - €100,000
Practice Lead / Head of Business Applications €95,000 - €125,000+

The Dutch freelance market remains well established for PHP developers, with contractors typically working on an hourly-rate basis. Market rates generally sit between €70 and €95 per hour, with web development specialists often averaging around €73 per hour and broader software engineering professionals averaging closer to €94 per hour. Actual rates vary depending on experience, framework expertise and project complexity, with developers skilled in Laravel, Symfony, modern APIs and cloud-native development often commanding the strongest premiums.

Regional variation in Power Platform pay is real but narrower than in some other specialisms we recruit for: Rotterdam shows the highest advertised median, Amsterdam the highest ceiling, and Utrecht and Eindhoven sit close to general software developer pay, with hybrid working standard across Dutch tech. Choose the sector and the depth of platform work you want first and the city second.

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Amsterdam €36,000 - €88,000
Utrecht region €36,000 - €69,000
Rotterdam €35,000 - €84,000
Eindhoven €36,000 - €71,000
Netherlands overall €36,000 - €76,000

Move forward your Power Platform Career

Expert advice from CEO, Jonathan Ellerbeck

Move forward your <b>Power Platform Career</b>

Progression in this specialism tends to run through breadth as much as depth. The people who move fastest are usually the ones who've picked up a second or third part of the Microsoft stack, not just gone deeper on the one they started with.

  • Junior to mid-level: moving from building individual apps and flows under close direction to owning a small project end to end, including the client conversation, typically over two years.
  • Mid to senior: the point where configuration and low-code skill alone stop being enough. You need genuine business process understanding, the judgement to push back on a bad requirement, and enough Dynamics 365 or Dataverse depth to know when a problem needs custom code.
  • Senior to lead or architect: designing how the whole Power Platform and Dynamics 365 estate fits together, not just one app or automation inside it, and owning decisions on behalf of the team.
  • Technical track: Solution Architect or Technical Consultant, for those who'd rather go deeper on the platform than manage a team.
  • Management track: Practice Lead or Head of Business Applications, for those drawn to leadership and owning client relationships at a portfolio level.

Mentorship matters more here than a lot of candidates expect, particularly for people moving in from a business analyst or project management background rather than a traditional development route. A good mentor is often the difference between staying a configuration specialist and genuinely becoming a consultant clients trust with ambiguous problems.

The clearest evidence of the AI’s impact is already visible in Microsoft's own certification catalogue rather than in speculation: PL-200, PL-400 and PL-600 are all being retired in favour of exams built around Copilot Studio, AI Builder and agentic workflows, which tells us AI is becoming a core part of the platform rather than an optional extra on top.

What that means in the Netherlands is shaped by how AI gets introduced into Dutch workplaces. Where a works council (ondernemingsraad) exists, it has consent rights over systems that process employee data or can monitor behaviour or performance, and AI tools increasingly fall within that scope, alongside the AVG and the EU AI Act. In practice, Power Platform professionals need to be comfortable working with compliance, privacy and works council stakeholders to get an agent or automated workflow approved, not only capable of building it. Knowing when a Copilot Studio agent is straightforward to deploy and when it needs formal consent first is becoming as valuable as the technical build.

The net effect on jobs looks less like displacement and more like a redefinition of what a senior Power Platform professional does: less manual configuration, more orchestration, governance and the ability to navigate the approval process around AI-driven automation as confidently as the automation itself.

Contract work exists in this market, largely through Microsoft partners, consultancies and digital transformation projects in financial services, energy and transport, and Power Platform freelancers are visible on Dutch freelance marketplaces. Freelancers usually quote hourly, and how an engagement is structured under the Wet DBA matters as much as the rate.

Remote working is available, but hybrid is more the norm than fully remote, particularly where automation work benefits from on-site collaboration with the business. Hybrid working is common across Dutch tech, and larger consultancies and established Microsoft partners tend to offer the most flexibility. The same patterns broadly hold for Dynamics 365-adjacent contract and remote roles, which are covered on our Dynamics 365 page.

Power Platform skills are sought after wherever Dutch organisations are automating operations and reporting on top of established systems, with demand spread across several sectors rather than concentrated in one:

  • Financial services, fintech and insurtech: internal process automation and reporting at banks, insurers and pension and financial institutions, centred on Amsterdam, with regulation such as DORA keeping governance and resilience in focus.
  • Energy and greentech: operational reporting and workflow automation as energy organisations scale and digitalise.
  • Transport and logistics: automating operational workflows and reporting across port and logistics networks.
  • Public sector: digital transformation programmes built around Microsoft 365, usually with data residency and governance requirements built into the brief.
  • Microsoft partners and consultancies: a meaningful share of Power Platform roles sit inside partner organisations and consultancies delivering Dataverse and Power Platform work across multiple clients.

Power Platform is still largely earning its place as a complement to existing systems rather than displacing them, so the strongest roles tend to sit with organisations that have worked out a deliberate governance model and Dataverse environment strategy for where Power Platform starts and the core systems end, rather than treating it as a workaround built by one team.
